Laudato Si on Care for Our Common Home

“If we approach nature and the environment without this openness to awe and wonder, if we no longer speak the language of fraternity and beauty in our relationship with the world, our attitude will be that of masters, consumers, ruthless exploiters, unable to set limits on their immediate needs. By contrast, if we feel intimately united with all that exists, then sobriety and care will well up spontaneously.”- Pope Francis –

How & When?
Growing up in the village, farming constituted about 70% of our household livelihood(s). Plants, soil and water became a part of me, even though I didnt know the science behind. When I started my Secondary Education, I was very much interested in Science and Technology; to understand more about various complex processes that make and sustain life on earth. It was right in my Biology lesson on Plants; With their key role as primary producers and how they significantly contribute towards CO2 removal including various ecological services; I fell in love with nature.
So what do you want to do in University?,
"Something to do with trees/nature" - that was always my response. Finally, NUST enrolled me unto a 4-year program in Environmental Science and Health.
Beyond Classroom Walls
I loved those field sessions to many places of ecological importance, including hands-on activities we did to deepen our experience in socio-ecological relationships. I also had an opportunity to volunteer with university clubs like Red Cross, Good Deeds Network, NUST Enviro Club and St Arnold Jansen (SVD) Enviro Team. This was a rewarding experience to me.

In 2019, I came across the Encyclical Letter Laudato Si’ by Pope Francis, I felt challenged and this inspired to learn more about this key Encyclical which argue that not only Science, but Faith and Religion can also play a significant role in addressing the tripple global crisis.
My Faith-based Sustainability Leader Journey
2 year after NUT, I became o much intereted in faith-driven action; inpired by Laudato Si. In 2022, I joined the Laudato Si Animators course to deepen my undertanding. Throughout the course, I had an opportunity to do some hands-on activities, establishing an initiative called Sutain Ma Earth; implementing small daylife sustainable living challenges like planting and donating tree seedlings in my community. This small effort won me the 2022 Pope Francis Youth Award nominee recognition in Zimbabwe. After completing my Laudato Si formation program, I researched on how other young people of faith were bringing Laudato Si in their places of worship and communities. This led me to CYNESA, where I'm currently volunteering as a Country Lead for Zimbabwe.
