The project entitled, ’Unlocking the Potential of Women Empowerment in Agribusiness’, was implemented in Makora and Chibeta rural communities which are remote and marginalised communities with limited access to transport networks, agricultural markets, income generating activities, education, health and sanitation.
The project’s main goal was to empower rural women and girls through Agribusiness and Education while making efforts against gender-based violence. This would in turn create societies where gender justice prevails as well as increasing household income to improve food and nutrition security, reduce poverty and improve access to basic health and sanitation. The income generated will also support the education and welfare of children especially the girl child.
The objectives of the projects were;
- To create a market for groundnuts within the community
- To strengthen the role of women in groundnut value addition.
- To improve the economic wellbeing of women
- Carry out a mini-research study on issues imposing burden on women such as Climate Change and Food Insecurity, Inadequate WASH and Education services.
- Raise awareness on Gender Based Violence so as to break barriers to women empowerment.
- Create a safe and sustainable platform for mentorship of young girls
These objectives will be achieved through:
- Training and dialogues on GBV, Transformational Change and Entrepreneurship development
- Providing capital to purchase groundnuts from targeted communities as well as installing a small-scale peanut butter production plant.
- Providing seed capital to initiate mini projects on poultry (broiler production).
- Identify other existing and potential income generating products and/ productions for future investment opportunities.
- Establishing S/he Circles for the mentorship of girls and boys
